Portland Trade Directory 1870 (Victoria)
PORTLAND
The capital of Normanby in the colony of Victoria, is about equi-distant from Melbourne east and Adelaide on the west. The town on the high ground to the west overlooks the bay, which is twenty-four by twelve miles, capable of affording acreage to the largest fleet in the world. A number of prisoners are now employed raising and testing the stone in the vicinity prior to the formation of a break water, which, once formed, will render the bay the safest and most commodious on the south coast of Australia. The bay is the natural outlet for in immense tract comprehending many millions of acres of agricultural and pastoral country. To the north-west lies the valley of the Wannon which cultivated with corn would produce as much annually as would feed the whole population of Victoria. The chief exports are cattle, horses, sheep, tallow, hides, bark, butter and recently wheat, corn and the different sorts of agricultural produce. With a railway to the north connecting the bay with Castlemaine, Sydney and Melbourne, the port of Portland will eventually be the Southampton of Victoria, the place of arrival and point of departure for the mail steamers to and from England.
